What are Sis RPGs?

A series of roleplaying games

Over the span of a few decades - the town of Kawagoe has been saved and destoryed dozens of times with both Japan and Earth as collateral damage, coming out on top of it all with barely a scartch on it. Going through catastrophic events everyday of the week like the world of Marvel and DC. Watch as Kawagoe and the world at large sweep all of these world-ending events under the rug.

In recent times unrelated to Kawagoe, some undisclosed town has suffered the wrath of ten suns or ten megasuns. Someone probably calculated it, it's easy for anyone who has gone through Homeroom Science Class.

Millions of lives have suffered under the cruel rule of Dark Lords, evil corporations, mass-murdering civilians, potato-loving terrorists, infestating roaches, social-media influencers, nukes, and... the power of democracy. Time and time again, unlikely heroes have risen up to stop these daily occurances from destorying Kawagoe and both Japan and the entire world.

All walks of life rise from the ashes, called to become the heroes and saviors to save the day. Let it be the simple shoes of a United States Marine, the eager school student, a lazy NEET, a ordinary housecat, Dark Lords and Dark Gods, and... Thomas Jefferson's bust.

Witness their rise into legends, let their stories breath life and intrigue, become one with them. Experience the horrors they commit, the constant betrayal of trust amongst themselves, and nonsensical reveals.

General tidbits and whatnots

Who in the world made these?

The Mad Genius of Kawagoe or more known as Kuniko Takahashi is Japanese woman from the Saitama Prefecture in Japan, she is the both the creator and writer of the series. Having created over fifty short story videos with multiple versions of RPG Game Maker over the years its existence. Of course there are some stories she's written that are way too ho-.. mad to be translated due to her unique perspective.

ZAKO2012 is her younger brother and is the upoloader of the series in Japan. Having the series uploaded since Janurary 2009, developed into the late 2000s and continuing strong into the 2020s.

Who are the translators?

Since it's conception, there was been one main translator of the series up to date. VGPerson has been translating the series since then, translating the entries that most audiences wouldn't have a problem with on her free time.

She is a well-known Japaense translator who has done official video game translations and Vocaloid songs. If you're interested of her works, you can click on her name and it'll take you to her website.

While I do not know if this is accurate, there is one other translator. Their name is syockit and nothing much is known about them other than the translated Sis RPG called "An Ecchi Summer Break".

Contributors?

As far as I know, there has only been one person that isn't VGPerson or myself that contributes to the series. The series has cultivated a small cult following in recent years before the existence of this website. Inspiring many people to style themselves in the writing style and bombastic feel.

ChairGTables is one such person and has created a parody akin to the writing and narrative styles of the Mad Genius of Kawagoe. Writing and creating Imouto RPG - Touch Me Senpai!!, a parody that takes many narrative beats from its inspiration.

They are a streamer and a game developer. If you would like to know more about them or are interested in their works, click on their name and check out their Itch.io or... LAME Dimension.

Special mention goes to Ezekiel Eastbrook, a writer and AI Prompt Engineer. The backgrounds used for the introduction bits of this remake are from their generative works.

Commonly used elements in Sis RPG

RPG Game Maker

RPG Maker or RPG Tsukūru is a series of programs focused on developing and creating roleplaying games or RPG for short. Originally created and developed by ASCII, and succeeded by Enterbrain with Kadokawa Future Publishing as their publisher.

It comes with pre-packaged tools and the means of creating your own RPG like the big names or a cinematic movie just the Mad Genius of Kawagoe. The latter's usage outside of creating wacky narratives, she employs the traditional turn-based mechanics found in many RPGs, and bullet hell gameplay native to Touhou Project.

For specifics, Kuniko Takahashi uses RPG Maker 2003, RPG Maker XP, and RPG Maker VX for much of the series. Over the course of the series, she transitions from different iterations of the program, showing both her skill and mastery - and general insanity.

Deceptive titles and imagery

The series has gained an infamous reputation for a multitude of reasons, one of which is the deceptive usage of erotic titles and imagery on the opening title menu. Kuniko Takahashi's usage of them is both an effective mask of what is really inside and a means to throw off any unsuspecting first-time viewers.

Leaving many first-time viewers a mixture of impressions causing some of them in utter confusion or intrigue within the first minute of viewing. Some may regret it while others will embrace it wholeheartedly, charming and enthralling those that stay.

"Don't judge a book by its cover" is an apt way of describing both the deception and the Mad Genius of Kawagoe's storytelling as a whole.

Bombastically insane storytelling

Once you get past the deceptive titles and imagery, it's down the rabbit hole and into the mind of the Mad Genius of Kawagoe from here. Her storytelling is the definition of insanity, employing whacky premises and plotlines that seem to come out of a fever dream or worse. Like a caveman using deep freeze to time-travel for a cure to his injures, a group of people playing baseball like Mario Superstar Baseball in a city where baseball is banned, or a tragic romance story between computer parts.

Dialogue is often reused in multiple stories and even within the same one. Many of which are stock phrases used as plot points and foreshadowing.

If I were to describe how the storytelling is, it is comparable to what is seen in an anime and manga.

An entrancing read that ensnares and embraces all

Over the years of its existence, the mind of the Mad Genius of Kawagoe and the world it has created has captured the minds and the hearts of many unsuspecting viewers. One of the many positives of Kuniko Takahashi is that she is able to both create and craft unique stories and settings in every release. Turning a simple premise of saving a brainwashed dog from a evil corporation into a host of black comedy and hilarity. Mixing various genres of fantasy, horror, science fiction, action, romance, and many more and blending them into a beautiful mess that no one can turn their eyes away from.

Enjoy the wacky and insane mind of a Japanese woman as she throws incredibly lame puns and enchanting plot twists at every conceivable turn. Creating as many cliches as much possible and shredding them in a blink of an eye with classical music.

When the dust settles and as the screen cuts to black, many viewers find themselves falling in love with the characters and stories presented before their eyes.

Uncommonly used elements in Sis RPG

Touhou-inspired gameplay

Aside from the turn-based mechanics and RPG elements found in almost all of Kuniko Takahashi's stories. In the most climatic and high-octane scenes of almost every Sis RPG, there is always a section where the screen becomes littered with bullets. Turning itself from a traditional visual novel into a bombastic action sequence.

That is called Bullet Hell, a genre that has popularized top-down and side-to-side shooters with Touhou Project as one of the main leads. In most Bullet Hells, you control a character and navigate through an ever increasing barrage of bullets while your character whittles down the enemy's health with their own bullets.

In Sis RPG, it's often used as a narrative high point and regularly used for the final battle or to throw off readers. Most of these sequences haves incredibly silly reasons for happening in the first place.

Unique assets

Over the course of the series, Kuniko Takahashi has gone to reusing assets, characters, dialogue, and even plot twists. The one thing that seperates her works with every release is the usage of unique assets.

Every once in awhile, one of her videos and especially those released in the early 2010s where she started mixing both 3D and video assets together. Bringing in a mixture of uncanny valley and a unique sense of tension whenever they appear.

You've got flying TVs, spaceships, and Thomas Jefferson's bust thrown into the mix of preset assets of RPG Maker. Making the later parts of the series an unforgettable experience.

Logic in general

One of the most well-known things about Mad Genius of Kawagoe's work is how utterly unrepentingly insane her stories devolve into. Throwing out logic right out the window with wacky premises and storylines as if it was second nature. If anything, there's barely anything logical about Sis RPG in general.

You never see a talking cat becoming an assassin, Thomas Jefferson's bust fighting a AWOL President, nor social media influencers attempting to be liked through their atrocities. Nor the fact that the setting being introduced at the start of every entry is a standard fantasy world, but to only get thrown out into a modern day Japan.

I swear to god, I'm not smoking anything. It's the truth, you've gotta believe me!

About the project, the creator behind it, and whatnots

Who am I?

My name is Victor Ho, I am a hobbyist web developer who cleans tables for a living. Graduated at Richland College during the fall of 2017, and a 2014 graduate of Lloyd V. Berkner High School before it was rebranded as LV Berkner High School STEM Academy in and around 2018. With a two year degree in Applied Science in Multimedia Web Design, two certificates in Visual Design, and a single ceritifcate in Web Design under my belt.

My hobbies are web development, read and writing, roleplaying, watching and reading anything about giant robots, collecting and sorting cards, drawing, and graphic design. My favorite genres for stories are of course giant robots without question while my favorite genres for music are of Japanese origin.

Suppose you can call me a certified Otaku.

The Original Sis RPG Project

The original Sis RPG fansite project was originally started in July 8th of 2017 and finished on October 21th of 2017. It was made with HTML5, CSS3, and with both Bootstrap 4 and Jquery as frameworks.

Like most projects I do, the goals and objectives were to create a professional website with modernized standards and web technologies that were common at the time, to understand the capabilities of Bootstrap, improving front-end development, and to create a website center on spreading knowledge of Mad Genius of Kawagoe's work to both local and worldwide.

Did I face any trouble after release?

I'd be lying if I said no. Given that this series is comedy in the most fundamental way right down to the core, of course there'd be some huge misunderstandings. The deceptive nature regarding both the initial title and graphics have had people give me some concerned looks and death stares at times. Many people have questioned the validity of both the series and my general sanity multiple times throughout the original's release and whenever I talk about it both online and in real life.

My friends relentlessly made jokes at my expense during the time I was attempting to do the 2019 remake and after several other things. Some people completely saw me as some sort of weird guy who has some sort of thing going on. I sure do miss those days though, it was actually quite fun explaining what the series is and talking to people about it all.

Despite all the harm it actually has done in the past, I still love the series deep down in my heart nonethless. It made me see the beauty of both web design and web development, and it made me both compelled and motivated to deepen both my understanding and develop my skills further. That is until stuff happened but you know, I'm still wanting to do it.

People might look at me weird for dedicating my life and craft to what is essentially a Meme. But my heart as a dedicated fanboy trumps all - and it is a stance I will stand by my entire life.

Two years later, I would attempt to conduct my first remake project on the fan site. It was supposed to be a graphical overhaul with an updated Bootstrap 4 to boot, adding hand-made graphics from me, and reusing alot of written context via copy-and-paste. Due to reusing content and a minor change in style, it was done relatively fast.

But then one day, a cup of coffee was poured on top of the Macbook it was worked and stored on. In mere minutes, the keyboards started to malfunction, then the computer itself just sort of died. I was without a properly functioning comptuer for about a month, and then stuff happened in my personal life over the next few years forced me to shelf the remake forever.

With a good look at the original fan site, going through alot of personal turmoil that was thrusted upon my shoulders without warning, and having no potential career prospects for the last few years. The mere idea of leaving the fansite as it is was off the tables, for I wanted it to be something more than just a simple fansite. Throwing out any planning or documentation writing out the window, I decided that I wanted to make it better and rewrite everything about the fansite.

Created as both an apology and a celebration to both the translator and those involved with Kuniko Takahashi indirectly and/or directly, and an apology towards myself for letting my personal issues hinder the development of my skills and personal growth as a person. Though this project isn't about me as a person but to see how far I've come since those days as a front-end developer.

This remake utilizes the recent release of Bootstrap 5 bundled with HTML5, CSS3, and bits of Javascript. This is more or less a complete overhaul and remake on both the writing and graphical fronts, with custom-made graphical backgrounds and thoguht-out and researched writing. The goal is to see how far I've come and to give Kuniko Takahashi's work a proper fansite that both I and everyone else can be proud of.
