Introductions

This page was a last minute addition to the already overhauled remake of Kuniko Takahashi's Sis RPG Fansite that was originally created and concepted around 2017/2018. With the writing portion of the remake completed on June 25th of 2024, I have decided to go the extra extra step of creating a page dedicated to educating people on how to create their very own Sis RPG with elements of the Mad Genius of Kawagoe.

This page will help those who want to write something similar to the various Sis RPG entries that have been released over nearly the last two decades of its existence. I will do my best to write and list down what I think would make a good Sis RPG by going through the works.

While I have not written anything similar to Sis RPG and should be the least likely to be trusted on writng something such as this. I have spent several months overhauling the writing portion for the series and dedicated alot of my time understanding each and every entry to the best of my ability which also includes ChairGTables's parody.

What is Sis RPG and what makes it?
  • ...a pot of Memes mixed into one another to make a cohesive whole.
  • ...a Shitpost that is given a fully realized outlet from the mind of a Japanese Woman.
  • ...a series of RPG Game Maker Games created for the sole purpose of entertaining others.
  • ...a Video to showcase one's craft of the pen and keystrokes of programming.
  • ...something that has influenced the writing style of ChairGTables and the creation of Liz aka Police.
  • ...something that inspired me to develop my web design/development skills.
  • ...a Tropperific series filled with lots of Tropes.
  • ...a series written from the perspective of a Japanese Woman
  • ...a Comedy series written like a YouTube Poop that has built itself a trove of Memes through its colorful writing and cast of characters.
  • ...a Black Comedy series that cleverly goes into Deconstruction of various tropes through its complex narratives.
  • ...totally not Porn.
  • ...has affected the lives of others, including mine.
  • ...one of the few series I enjoy for what it is, flaws and all.

What do you need in order to write your own?

This section will cover what kind of requirements you need to have, and what you need to know in order to write your own Sis RPG, and/or atleast something similar to it. As the entire series itself is a walking and talking Meme/Shitpost that is very much akin to a YouTube Poop.

I will include what I would recommend which entries of the respective Eras that would provide the best insight into the series, and non-series things to look at since some people who have watched the series are from overseas and may need something to inspire them to think differently. Personally speaking, you do not have to watch what I listed at all if you think it is too much to consume and handle. All of us would understand your choice and that's really okay, yeah?

And if you're looking for something like music related to the series, they can be found in the Glossary page. They are categorized into genres/types and whatnots in order to make your selection as easy as possible.

  • Exposure to either a Sis RPG, a YouTube Poop, or a boatload of Memes and Shitposts
  • Exposure to various kinds of media - video games, TV Shows, movies, anime, books, and comicbooks come to mind
  • Awareness of what a Trope is, and the existence of TVTropes as a whole
  • Basic fundenmentals of writing stories and characters
  • One of the game development programs and tools from the RPG Game Maker Series
  • A passion that will be the center piece of why you make something similar to a Sis RPG
  • A good sense and understanding of humor - this can be developed over time
  • A computer that is compatible with the programs and tools of your chosen RPG Game Maker
  • A workable foundation of your chosen RPG Game Maker, but you can start fresh off the boat if you want
  • A basic set of tropes and understanding of them, these can be built upon
  • A trove of graphical assets, can be the default assets and it also can be something different
  • A mixture of both music from RPG Game Maker and classical music, they must be unfitting
  • Screaming sound effects akin to Sound Novel Maker 2

Narrative Writing

So, you've made it this far and you're curious of how one should write the narrative of something similar to a Sis RPG and/or something akin to the Mad Genius of Kawagoe. Of course since the Sis RPG Series is a long-running series that has been built up for nearly two decades, the style of its story-telling has been improved and developed enough to be researched and condensed into bit-sized bits of information that anyone can digest easily.

Of course, this will be from my perspective and what I think would make a good Sis RPG. Strictly speaking, it's okay to do One-Shots if that's your intention.

I'll categorize it through the Eras of the series then do my best to put my own words in it. It's alot of information to eat up and condense though.

  • All Eras
    • Three-Act Structure
    • Most entries between all Eras use the Three-Act Structure. They have a generally clear start, middle, and end but sometimes the plot and narrative are entirely done at random. Act I introduces the setting, characters, and what kickstarts the plot while Act II is about how the characters deal with what is thrown at them while Act III is all about how the story ends and the conclusion of it.

    • The "In a typical world of swords and magic..." introduction
    • Most entries in the series start out with a basic introduction that says it is a fantasy setting before abruptly subverting it with graphics of something modern and/or mudane. Sometimes the setting is in something like a computer, so it'll go with something like "In the typical world of Windows XP...".

    • Wacky and insane premises
    • This bit works in conjuction with the above, while the above subverts the expectations of the readers/viewers, this one functions to completely draw them into the story and narrative. Just in case, most premises of the Sis RPG Series are by default wacky. The premise acts as the starting point of Act I such as a Necromancer being hired by a food processing company so they can have them raise the dead in order to turn them into a food business.

    • Aborted Arcs, Conflict Killers, and Ass Pulls
    • The series is known for having most of their narratives starting out with a very interesting premise/arc, spending a brief amount of time introducing the setting and characters to the readers/viewers. But then suddenly and abruptly throwing it out the window either through a Ass Pull and/or a Conflict Killer. Sometimes the Aborted Arc occurs when the Protagonist is killed off out of nowhere and/or when another character introduces a Conflict Killer that stops everything that is going on and causing the characters to deal with the new plot development.

A Conflict Killer is what happens when the narrative spends a good amount of time with the initial conflict or problem before shoving in something without proper build up and/or Foreshadowing. An example can be like a cat going out of his comfort zone to save the world from a Dark Lord, just as they're about to confront them, they're informed that the Dark Lord has died out of nowhere and that a huge space rock is about to crash onto the Earth.

Ass Pulls is what happens when a new plot development is suddenly thrown into the narrative out of nowhere without any proper development and/or Foreshadowing. In the case of the series, it happens on the regular and almost all the time - it can happen literally at the start of Act I and at the end of Act III. A example can be like a Hero stops the Dark Lord starting their evil plan but then all of a sudden the Dark Lord pulls out a second form when the entire narrative says that they only have one form.

    • Aesops
    • The series loves throwing in An Aesop at the end of a entry's narrative. Generally is done either by the antagonist, the real main character, or a completely different character who has no bearing in the plot at all. The Aesop is generally giving out a message about something related to the narrative. An example can be like a story about two Dark Lords power-flexing contest, and how their reckless behavior ended up destorying the entire world in the process. It goes onto explain that they should've considered using their powers for the forces of good instead of seeing who is the better of the two.

    • One-Shot Characters
    • This is universial usage as every entry has a narrative bloated with character that only appear once. A One-Shot character is a character that appears once in a narrative and generally they leave it before it ends. Their functions can serve a varity of things, such as pushing the narrative forward, worldbuilding, enhancing and inproving another character, and to shake up the narrative itself. They can take up different kind of roles but generally they are used as throwaways than anything important or meaningful. In this series, they can be a main character, an antagonist, or the second most important thing in the narrative.

As the series developed from the Early Era, the usage of One-Shot characters lessened as Kuniko Takahashi started reusing the same characters she had developed over the years. Her usage was where they were once important but became generally disposable over time to having a pool of characters to rinse and repeat aka Recurring Characters and Recurring Elements.

A good example of a One-Shot character or a cast is the entire cast of Jurrasex Park as the main character, the antagonist, and the supporting cast all appear in that entry specifically and never appear in any other afterwards.

    • Recurring Characters and Recurring Elements
    • This is the pure evolution of years and years of developing narratives and carefully crafting elements from One-Shot characters. Borrowing several elements from them and making them in the form of characters that either return as Recurring Characters or a specific kind such as a Recurring Element. In this series, despite reusing the same characters, almost every character is either a iteration with the same base character traits of the original or a character element returning with a different face and purpose.

      • Example - Recurring Character - Naotsugu Kanae, a character who appears in Sexy Winter Vacation, Erobian Nights, and An Ecchi Summer Break. His base character traits are him serving as the reader/viewer's point-of-view, a everyman who is either a highschool student or working-class man, always having a thing for women, always thrown into situations he can never overcome, and tends to be the source everything wrong. He is generally put into main character-like roles where he is the point-of-view and assume the main character role with internal monologues and narration.
      • Example - Recurring Element - Dark Lord, a element that is almost always designated to a antagonistic character, appearing in a majority of entries. They always appear to assume the generic villain template that always wants to do something evil or horrible to the other characters because they can or something. Despite having a generic title, they're always different from each other with different kind of purposes and depths to their characters. Sometimes they're the antagonist and sometimes they assume the main character role.
    • One-Liners and Quotes
    • Over the years, as the narratives developed, so has the writing style and dialogue. From casual and throwaway lines to memorable and quotable lines. I'll provide a general list seperate from this instead of providing examples.

  • Early Era
    • Three-Act Structure
    • Most narratives in the Early Era are simple and straightforward with a simple premise that anyone can understand from the get-go. The flow on the narrative is as simple as Point A to Point B, but sometimes the initial premsie is just window-dressing and completely forgotten in insanity. This mainly happens in any entry with a CYOA or Choose your Own Adventure-style story as they're seemingly and completely random.

      • Act I
      • Most starts of the narrative for Act I typically introduces either the main character or the antagonist first. The main character is either going to work, is at work, or is being sent in to resolve a conflict while the antagonist either has a abstract issue with the world such as a Dark Lord, something against the main character for no sensible reason like a Company Manager, or something out of the blue like a Super Robot. Sometimes the main character has no antagonist at all and they're just doing their own thing that usually ends up creating an antagonist.

The world is generally at peace and nothing is going on until something does happen, the main character find themselves in a situation where their everyday life is turned upside down by the antagonist or by something completely random. Act I is spent establishing the characters, both setting and premise, and building up to Act II.

      • Act II
      • The narrative structure for Act II follows how the main character deals with the situation they're in because of the antagonist or chilling and doing their own thing. They're either fighting their way, running away, and/or fumbling their way to the antagonist for the most part. Regardless of what they're doing, the antagonist is either doing nothing, doing their absolute best to get rid of the main character and/or is finding out that the main character is somehow a problem to everyone.

Sometimes the main character dies out of nowhere and is replaced by someone who killed them by accident and sometimes the antagonist is the Starter Villain and gets replaced by a even bigger threat or killed off.

Sometimes, the main character is brought back to life and sometimes they're just gone and replaced with someone else.

      • Act III
      • The narrative for Act III is the confrontation of the main character and wheover is left as the antagonist. Typically they either fight against each other in a bombastically top-down shooter or in a one-on-one duel via Turn-Based Combat. The antagonist is either killed or spared by the main character and the narrative ends with a anti-climatic ending where they're either nuked by a different country or it just ends abruptly.

Sometimes the both of them just hang out with each other like best buddies and nothing really happens or there is no resolution at all. The Aesop is done by them and typically the messages they deliver is done from a good place... kind of.

  • Middle Era
    • Decoy Protagonist
    • The Middle Era is filled with high chances of death, and usually most narratives have a Decoy Protagonist driving the first half before getting killed off either due to plot or something entirely random. Readers/viewers can expect the first character they're introduced to unexpectedly not being the main character despite eating up alot of the screentime.

    • Villain Protagonist
    • While the protagonists of the Early Era were as straight-laced as a rope in terms of their morality, the protagonists of the Middle Era either devolve or start out as a Villain Protagonist with a few exceptions. Typically, the protagonist starts off with adecent motive of goodness in their heart but they gradually start piling up a body count and proceed to do comedically horrible things in the name of their goals, and sometimes the situation of the narrative has them cross the line into villainy either unknowingly and/or willingly.

    • Three-Act Structure
    • This the Era where Kuniko Takahashi becomes the Mad Genius of Kawagoe, turning herself into a writer and a household name in Japan. Most narratives in this Era are both simple and complex at the same time, going from the simple and easy to understand narratives of the Early Era to what would become Kuniko Takahashi's best works in the series and what most readers/viewers would become familar with, the sheer insanity and unpredictability that would become the hallmark of her work.

The premises of the Early Era are completely overshadowed by what the premises of the Middle Era as while they seem normal at first. From a simple invasion between America and Demons comes the insanity of talking horses racing to win money to save the North Pole, cavemen going forward in time to find a cure for their mortal wounds, to a young college student staging a daring plan to save his beloved dog from living the life of an assassin dog.

      • Act I
      • Most starts of the narrative open up with a "In the typical world of swords and magic..." before introducing either the main character or the Decoy Protagonist. They either talk about who they are and what their life is up until their involvement with the narrative, the narrator gives out a brief backstory of their life, doing their everyday life, and/or jumpstarting the narrative by doing something horrible from the get-go. The antagonist is either introduced during the introduction of the protagonist, not present at all until the very end of the narrative, and/or is revealed within minutes later. The problem the main character has to face comes right out the gate, it is either self-inflicted or caused by someone else in the narrative.

Act I generally ends with the main character resolving to confront the problem themselves which involves a frontal assualt of the antagonist's area, doing something incredibly mundane such as training or looking for a job, or doing a favor for someone that also includes the antagonist.

        • Example #1 - An army of roaches rise from the depths of a basement, enroaching and infecting the towns around them as the owner of the home of said basement calls in a team of cleaners to exterminate the roaches. Two of the three cleaners die in the operation, leaving in the new meat of the team to deal with the situation.
        • Example #2 - After a horrible investment gone wrong, a polar bear from the North Pole's hopes and dreams are swiftly saved by a talking Horse. The Horse enters a deadly race in hopes of winning money to save the North Pole.
      • Act II
      • The narrative flow of Act II is where evrything spirals out of control. No matter what happens, the main character is thrown into some sort of insane action sequence akin to Tohou occurs where the screen is covered in technocolored bullets and explosions. Most of the enemies they face are generally innocent people defending their home, terrorists, or they just happened to be in the way of the main character. As the main character racks up a body count, the narrative goes crazy and throws in multiple Plot Twists, The Reveals, and Ass Pulls it could feasbily muster and throw at the reader/viewer.

Somewhere along the lines, the main character and sometimes the antagonist undergo some level of Character Development that fuels the rest of their actions. And in between all the general insanity and crazy stuff, Deconstruction occurs as well - and typically it is reserved both the main character and the antagonist.

        • Example #1 - Main character goes on a quest to saved their beloved from their captor by agreeing to their terms of doing a job for them. After a long journey, the main character's beloved transforms into a giant monster out of nowhere as their captor reveals to the main character that they included a bonus for them.
        • Example #2 - Main character pulls off a rescue mission to save their beloved but accidentially kills them in the process of trying to get them to remember who they are. Despite be grief-striken, the main character writes it off as nothing even though they spent most of the narrative loving them to death.
        • Example #3 - After a long long fight, the main character is tired out and swiftly defeated by the antagonist and their forces. Just as they're about to be finished off, a completely different group comes in and betrays them in a bid to take over the world as more people come in out of nowhere.
        • Example #4 - Main character finds themselves awakening in a different era in time after deep-freezing their body to stop their mortal wounds from killing them, their goals of finding a cure for it becomes dashed as the doctor who they turn to for help wants to capture them and sell them because they're from a different time period.
      • Act III
      • The narrative for Act III is the accumulation and buildup of the first two Acts, this typically results in the main character and/or their antagonist undergoing some Character Development and going off of it. Sometimes their Character Development nets them a good ending but most of the time Character Checks reverts them back to Pre-Character Development. A good example would be The Great Bosom Plot's Richard who constantly regrets losing his supposed loved ones before dumping his grief into the dumpster and repeat his mistakes again by replacing them without a second thought.

Outside of that, the climax of the narrative as a whole happens as the main character and whoever the antagonist is duke it off. Sometimes it is a verbal confrontation, sometimes they just fight off - but the confrontation usually has the antagonist reveal why they're even doing anything in the narrative that is somehow more sensible than whatever the main character is doing. Most of their motives are either good in nature or as nonsensical as the main character's motives.

        • Example #1 - After some roughousing, the antagonist reveals to the main character that the reason why they seperated from the nation with their country is because wanted to their country to recognized as their own.
        • Example #2 - A young cat questions their human father of why they're doing evil things for his wife who is possessed by a demon. He tells his cat of his tragic backstory of how his wife, of how she murdered everyone on their wedding day. Instead of running away in fear of her evil deeds, he fell in love with them to the point he himself turned evil himself.
        • Example #3 - A cyborg highschooler confronts the leader of a terrorist cell that has took over the only potato factory in his town. The terrorist leader reveals that they only took over the potato factory because of a online article told them that potatos are good for their health. The cyborg highschooler internally monologues that he feels guilty for posting the article that lead to the entire situation, steeling himself to end the villain he had created.

Sometimes, Act III is just the main character fumbling up their life and seeing it unravel in front of their eyes, getting that Deconstruction injected in their very bones and stuff.

The endings generally have the main character killed off by the antagonist or by mere chance. Instead of the main character delivering the Aesop expect in certain occasions, a Broken Aesop is done by the antagonist and whoever is alive if the antagonist bites it. Sometimes there are no resolutions to the narrative and it just cuts off and ends right there.

        • Example #1 - After defeating the enemy general, the main character realizes that their attempts of giving their country name and respect should be honored. But instead of respecting their honor, the main character proceeds to completely disregard their struggles and indirectly disrespects them.
        • Example #2 - After stopping the world from being ended by a giant space rock that housed an entire civilization of moon people or something, the main characters realize they either had to let the Earth end or the giant space rock and the moon people. Stating that it was a hard choice to make despite making it clear they selfishly abandoned the moon people.
        • Example #3 - After a series of gambits agaisnt other games and gameboards with severe case of cheating, the Shogi pieces delivers a message about maintaining and playing by the rules while stating that rulebreakers should be punished. But all of a sudden, China jumps in and accuses the country of Japan of breaking international law over detaining fishers within their lands.
  • Late Era
    • Deception of titles and graphics are light
  • Late Era
    • Hidden Depths
    • While Character Development in the series has or have been relatively low for the most part, the Late Era exchanges Character Development for Hidden Depths. Hidden Depths are basically layers of characterization that is used as a tool of exploring both characters and the narrative they're in. Like, you may have a character that is as bland as cardboard for most of the story, but they get a huge amount of character depth through Hidden Depths such as a small amount of character narration. In some cases, Hidden Depths can help a character who is lacking in the development department look and feel like an actual character but sometimes it does not work because it's either done too late or done in a way that does not satsify the reader/viewer.

    • Three-Act Structure
    • This is the Era where the Three-Act Structure is fully realized and used to its fullest potential despite the entirety of the Middle Era's narratives are. The narratives of the Late Era have a clear and defined structure while still being incredibly unclear and unpredictable, going all out to deliver a narrative that goes away from being simple and complex to deep and well-thought narratives that somehow tackled the middle of the 2010s. While a good portion of the Middle Era Deconstructed a good number of Tropes in few of the entries, the Late Era fully embraces it left and right like no other to the point of becoming a Deconstructor Fleet.

The unique thing about the premises of the Late Era is how most of the narratives are full blown Deconstructions and examinations of certain aspects of the middle of the 2010s, unintentionally becoming Harsher in Hindsight due to real-life events occuring similarly or otherwise. Instead of the insanity of the Middle Era, the Late Era indirectly and/or directly gets straight to the point with its narrative, characters, and themes while Deconstructing them. From a simple "rescue" mission of a man's beloved dog comes stories of how bad Social Media can drive a person to commit horrible things to Robot Presidents stopping Presidents from nuking the world with nuclear weapons. From straightforward to insanity-induced and complex to wel-thought out narratives.

Most of the narratives of this Era are exaggerated examinations of rising issues such as Social Media and depictions of how a President without restraints would act to name a few. Although, Kuniko Takahashi unintentionally comes across as insensitive and tasteless depending on how the reader/viewer views these works.

      • Act I
      • The narrative flow starts out with the "In a typical world of swords and magic..." as it opens up to either the main character fighting a Recurring Element, the main character's everyday life getting disrupted by someone else or by their own mistakes, or the main character going out of their way to jumpstart the narrative. In any case, despite the introduction focusing on a world of fantasy, everything is set within the Modren Era and generally within Kawagoe, America or otherwise. From there, it's either all non-stop action propelled by the main character, the everyday life of the main character improving and abruptly disrupted by something, or both the main character antagonist amping up the stakes.

        • Example #1 - The leader of a nation decides out of nowhere that he and his co-horts must take over the world. Launching nukes and bringing in countries that bend to their almighty military strength, taxing them 99.9%, and calling them inferior beings.
        • Example #2 - The hero of humanity fights against the true evil in the form of a Dark Lord, despite having the upper hand in the battle. The hero is taken off-guard by a attack and completely at the mercy of the Dark Lord. Instead of being swiftly ended by a final attack and fatal strike, a photo is taken of them beign down on their knees and posted on Social Media.
        • Example #3 - A small town is wiped off the face of the Earth with all of its humans killed. The reason is because it had gone through the democratic process of voting between two potential mayots for the town. Due to one man's unwillingness to abide by his rights to vote, his mother alongside everyone in his town were massacred in order for Demonkind to thrive and replace the population.

Most of the main characters either Decoy Protagonists and/or Villain Protagonists with most of Act I exploring their character and actions, and sometimes it isn't about them but the themes and tropes of the narrative being examined. It's either character-driven and/or plot-driven/narrative-driven from onward with the stakes risen higher and higher like the sun.

      • Act II
      • The narrative flow of Act II is a exploration of how the characters and the examination of the tropes blend in with each other. It goes deeper into its Deconstruction while weaving the characters and narrative into its comedic nature as a Meme and/or Shitpost.

Usually, Act II is about how the main character overcomes the trials caused by their actions, deciding that they must try harder and amp up the stakes due to the antagonist's actions, attempting to get back to their everyday life by doing unspeakable things to achieve that return, or purposely causing the situation to spiral out of control. In most cases, the main character becomes worse over time while the antagonist in question becomes morally better than them, and sometimes they replace the main character as the protagonist.

Act II is like a Hourglass Plot where two characters and their respective character arcs have them transition through a journey where one gets worse while the other becomes better. They often mirror each other in more ways than one, but this series generally does not tackle doing a Hourglass Plot due to how the characters are written and the plot ddevelopment of them.

      • Act III
      • Act III's narrative flow is all about completing the Deconstructions that were set in place within Act I, bringing whatever the characters and and narrative to the most natural conclusion. Although, this series often doesn't do an ending naturally or conclusively for most of the Early Era and half of the Middle Era. The Late Era actually has a conclusion to most of their narratives for Act III and typically it's about how everything is returned to normal or in terms of Stan Lee, "The illusion of change" aka the Status Quo.

While Chracter Devleopment for most of the series is regulated to the main characters and the side characters, the Late Era abandons Character Development and opts to give the characters Hidden Depths. Although, most of the Character Development goes to the antagonist instead of the main character as the Hidden Depths enchances them due to the Deconstruction angle the Late Era is attempting to go for.

The general flow of Act III is about the conclusion of the narrative and how everything goes back to normal aka the Status Quo. The general situation of the narrative cnocludes with most of the characters either dying because of their choices, things getting reversed via Time Travel, the events not even occuring at all and ending anti-climatically, everything ends well for everyone but the antagonist.

The body count is also insanely high as a number of unnamed characters and cannon fodder like most Eras, the Late Era plays everything for laughs and comedic effect.

Deconstruction - Part 1
What is a Deconstruction?

When you think of Deconstruction, what is the first thing that comes to mind?

What comes up would be breaking down, disassembling, and/or tearing something apart. Decontruction in terms of writing is used to closely examine and play tropes completely straight. When I mean playing a trope straight, I mean done in a either with realistic cause and effects and/or given a realistic angle with potential real world consequences. In most causes of Deconstructions, they're used either tastefully or disrespectfully, and they can either make or break the subject matter which is heavily dependant on the person behind the writing room.

To make things simple, think of Deconstructions like a courtroom case where you have a the defendant and a set of witnesses being questioned by a prosecutor. The prosecutor runs them through the basic questions to set the scene before cross-examining the questions and everything that they were involved with. Making sure that there is no stones unturned, and that every bit of information is throughly examined. What they gather during this period would be the general characterization of the defendant and witnesses, the general backstory of the case, and generalized summary of the events of said case.

Basically, it's like research but instead of presenting the information to a courtroom, you're presenting it to other people.

What kinds/types of Deconstructions are there?

And just like a courtcase, there are different kinds of Deconstructions that are used. In this case, I'll be briefly talking about what was used in this series and whatnots.

Deconstructed Trope

A Deconstructed Trope is a Deconstruction trope that can be used for comedic effect, narrative purposes, or more. In the case of this trope, it's a more individualized Deconstruction that focuses either on a individual aspect or a trait instead of something much grander or expansive.

A good example for a Deconstructed Trope for both comedic and narrative purposes is The Great Bosom Plot usage of the Replacement Goldfish trope through Richard. Throughout the first act of the narrative, Richard's entire motivation for doing what he does is to save his beloved Vicky but he ends up killing her in a fit of misguided rage. Instead of mourning her, he decides to quickly drop the whole matter and replace Vicky. This earns him the ire of his professor and a hellionized Vicky, the former calling him out for casually replacing the latter while the latter comes back to murder him due to Richard not mourning her at all.

Deconstructed Character Archetype

A Deconstructed Character Archetype is what happens when a character type is given the Deconstruction treatment. Just like a Deconstructed Trope, this type of Deconstruction is used like a Character Study of sorts and is either used either a realistic sense, black comedy sense, or more.

A good example such a Deconstruction is the main character of Sexy Panties Knight, President Sanderson. The President Evil trope is throughly broken down in a black comedy way by showcasing the readers/viewers what happens when a President decides to Take Over The World For The Evulz and abuse his power. Thomas Jefferson's bust comes along and attempts to stop him from destroying the world, even though his entire motivation is to show the world that War Is Hell with nukes around.

Despite losing his life against Thomas Jefferson's bust, the world disarmed itself of its nuclear weapons because of President Sanderson's Invoked Trope of a President Evil.

Deconstructor Fleet

A Deconstruction Fleet is a Deconstruction trope is what happens when you attempt to deconstruct as many tropes as you can possibly can do while examining and playing straight. It can be done comedically, seriously, and muhc more in need to be, but be careful of how they're handled.

A good example of a Deconstruction Fleet is Super Lingerie Quest and Big-Bust Brawl as the both of them throughly deconstruct as many tropes as they can for their respective narratives.

The former deconstructs tropes related to Clones, exploring what happens when someone uses their clones as expendable bullets without a second thought of how many of his clones died in the process nor accounting their worth as both people and individuals. He gets attacked by one of his clones who is suffering from the angst and suffering of his fellow clones, dying in the process.

The latter throughly deconstructs Social Media tropes through three different approaches by three different characters. All of them showcasing what happens when someone cares about getting likes no matter the cost, when someone they aspire to be uses every possible of their blunder to boost their own popularity, and the logical conclusion in the form of someone using their body/image to garner attention. Although, Harsher In Hindsight is at play given it was released way before Social Media became an actual problem for people in real-life.

Deconstruction - Part 2
What makes a good Deconstruction?

While I do enjoy me a good cushy romance story with all the fluff like a love-striken highschooler, I also enjoy analyical stories that focus on the darker aspects of things and deconstructive approaches. That does not mean I'm qualified to say what makes a Deconstruction good or not but I can atleast try to generalize what is good perspectively speaking from the type of media that I consume.

I'll do a list since writing a paragraph would be far too long to just explain in much simple details, just like the usual, I'll put them down in two seperate sections for both narrative and characters.

  • Narrative
    • Well-executed and well-thought usage of the tropes deconstructed
    • Enhances and enriches the narrative as a whole
    • The Deconstruction isn't used as a vehicle for the writer to criticize the narrative and/or trope in question
    • Either fully explores or examines what happens when a trope occurs in a realisitic manner
    • Deconstructs tropes respectuflly as much as possible
    • Values the time of the reader/viewer regardless of the tone of the narrative
    • The writer knows the material of the Deconstruction they're writing for
  • Character
    • Throughly explored and tasteful Deconstruction of the character
    • The Deconstruction enhances the reader/viewer's perception of the character
    • The character enhances the quality of the narrative instead of dampening it
    • The character's Deconstruction is treated with respect by the writer and doesn't make the reader/viewer roll their eyes
    • The character makes the reader/viewer postively feel something from their Deconstruction, it can either positive and/or negative character traits
    • The character doesn't exist to eat up and waste time with their Deconstruction

If any of you have read any of my personal thoughts, you'll all know that The Warrior Returns has been talked about briefly or seldomnly, with most of the mentions and gripes being about Minsu Kim's character. Despite having huge misgivings of the series myself, that's only related towards how Season 1 was written as Season 0 is a good look in how a Deconstruction is done. I may sound rather intense and preachy about it, but forgive me on that.

I have a Love-Hate Relationship with the series, detesting most of Season 1 but enjoying the changes of Season 0. I see the series as a good introduction to what can make a good and/or bad Deconstruction. Obviously, the writer has improved his writing ever since Season 1 and his knowledge of the Isekai genre is strong enough to salvage his early writing mistakes almost instantly. I sum up my emtire feelings and experience in two words, Bile Fascination.

Personally, you can skip out on any of this. I will not be offended if you stopped reading at this point as it is full-on spoilers.

Just in case and as a brief touch up, The Warrior Returns is a Manhwa written by NARACK and drawn by FUNGBACK, and it is a Genre Deconstruction story of the Isekai genre. Specififcally it focuses on the after story of a Isekai story with much of the narrative deconstructing the most common tropes and characters you'd find. As you know, Isekai is a genre that is heavily populated and saturated with many adaptations being made from it. The Warrior Returns is what happens when someone who knows a oversaturated genre decides to focus their entire writing career throughly deconstructing it.

The premise - Minsu Kim finds himself losing everything he cared about on Earth returning from a year-long journey in a different world. Having been hit by a truck, he is unwillingly recruited to fight in a war against a Demon Lord as the Warrior of the world he was transported to. After fighting to save that world, Minsu Kim finds out that his parents have died while he was away, his remaining family and friends wants nothing to do with him, and his chances of improving his life meaningfully are dashed with his expulsion from school. With nothing but his school uniform and nothing in his name, Minsu Kim summons his divine weapon and takes out his rage against the entire world.

Jeongsu Park's everyday life ends in misery and despair three weeks after Minsu Kim's initial rampage after a fateful encounter with the Warrior. Witnessing his family getting slaughtered by him firsthand and being turned into the very Warrior that took his life. Jeongsu Park swears revenge after his year-long journey in another world is completed, aiming to end Minsu Kim's life himself.

I'll be talking about Season 0 for the most part for this portion while talking about Season 1 in the next one.

Season 0 builds on top of what I considered to be writing in bad faith that is Season 1, fixing the problematic usages of Deconstructions of the Isekai genre I've ever seen in my life. The problems that plagued Season 1 have largely been fixed and patched up such as Minsu Kim's deconstructive character writing and the rather disrespectful approach and tone of the narrative such as high-speed pacing and an oppressive atmosphere. Season 0 fixes up everything that is wrong by exploring the deconstructive angle throughly and respectfully through the other characters. Fleshing out their rather barebones characterization and backstory while both bouncing off of and enhancing Minsu Kim's overall character writing, expanding the worldbuilding of the setting, and explaining several things that were left out by Season 1's writing.

All of the characters are Deconstructions of your typical Isekai character archetypes that you could find anywhere with Minsu Kim being based off the most generic-looking Stock Light-Novel Hero. Season 0's approach to the character Deconstructions is done by exploring who they were Pre-Isekai before their Post-Isekai, generally the kind of worlds they were transported to, the type of skills and weapons they've obtained and how it aligns with their characterization, and the cause-and-effect of their return from the other world. The writer goes through great lengths to capture what makes them who they are and why they are Warriors, and why they fight and whatnots. The most important bit is how every Warrior is considered a Foil to Minsu Kim and to each other.

For the Warriors aligned with humanity, they're either forced to fight due to their immense military might or worse, ensuring that that they'll never be able to have a peaceful life - although that's only in the current timeline of the narrative. For the Warriors hell-bent on destroying humanity, their destructive powers can easily destroy thousands in a matter of seconds, ensuring that only a Warrior can fight them due to conventional weapons generally not working on them with nukes being invalid way later.

The tactics and thought processes of how the military treats the Warriors are rather cruel, as they basically consider the heroic Warriors as throwaway chess pieces as they force them to do old fasioned one-on-one duels in hopes they take the other Warriors with them.

A good example is the introductory arc of Season 0 which chronicles the Magic Warrior Yuseong Jin for about ten chapters or more. Yuseong Jin basically deconstructs the Power Fantasy angle of a Stock Light-Novel Hero who utterly detests having to be a Ordinary High-School Student and the mundane life behind it. He sees his time in the other world as a means to be his true self, enjoying being a somebody and was close to going out on a rampage when he returned to being a nobody on Earth. The narrative presents him as a self-serving man who has no interests in saving humanity from a rampaging Warrior who jumps at the chance to be a hero so he can be a somebody again.

He was basically worshipped and seen as some sort of godly figure whose entire existence of being from a different world capable of saving the world he was brought to is seen as a negative thing. Capable of doing things that no other person in that would could feasibly do with an accelerated rate of growth which is a common thing found in most Isekai protagonists. Although, it was his fault he was sent back to Earth because some Warriors are given an offer to stay in the worlds they saved.

When he meets to face off Minsu Kim, not only is he out of his depth, but he further corrupts and enhances Minsu Kim's sorrow and despair by being himself. Ironically, Yuseong Jin's Power Fantasy is ended by a Warrior who was transported to a fantasy world who easily defeats his skillset.

The later arcs in Season 0 are structured same in some ways, most of the time they're foils to each other and/or get proper development that they never got in Season 1. You get the Warriors facing each other, their backstories explored and how it relates to the world they were sent to and how their skillset functions, and even the feelings and meaning behind their battles. While the writer does include how the world and the militaries of it react, the execution is far better developed with Season 0 as both the stakes and the dyanmics are increasingly changed compared to how Season 1 does with a world that's been in hell for a single year with most of the details either glossed over or mentioned briefly until Chapter 20 does away with most of the world.

What makes a bad Deconstruction?

Just like how a great story can be made by amazing writers, it can easily be destroyed by poorly made choices - in the writing room or by how well it is received by readers/viewers. Just look how bad Game of Thrones ended when it ran out of books to adapt from, going from the pinnicle of fantasy writing to just a simple blip on the map. And if you've read any of my personal thoughts on the narrative of each entry, there are some stories that I even have problems with either due to the structure of the narrative, the pacing, or a different issue altogether.

In the case of Deconstructions where they're supposed to be an examination of what happens when a trope is applied with realistic implications, sometimes it can be done poorly depending on how it is executed or how often it is used. If a Deconstruction is used way too much than needed or has become the main means and vehicle for the writer to use, it can become a Cliche and/or a commonly used trope. If that happens, then the Deconstruction can be more of a deteriment and a fillbuster for and of the writer. It can become alot of worse to the point that it can become predictable and stale.

The one thing that the series does right on all accounts in my eyes is that it never becomes too predictable or even stale. The Deconstructions that Kuniko Takahashi writes are done in a Black Comedy way with later entries being hit with Harsher in Hindsight. She never wrote any of her entries in a disrespectful and/or distasteful way, she can be seen as that but she has a completely different perspective if the reader/viewer is from a different country other than Japan. We are all entitled to write the way we want, but we have to do it in a way that respects both the time and dignity of the readers/viewers.

They can become less meaningful and impactful if the narrative and characters are written in a way that seems to be a representation of the writer's thoughts on the things they're deconstructing. It's like how a single character suddenly becomes preachy and less of a character or how a narrative becomes way too on the nose of what its trying to deliver.

Kuniko Takahashi just hits different as she her Deconstructions differently and for the betterment for everyone involved.

  • Narrative
    • The narrative deconstructs way too many things at once, never properly exploring what is presented
    • The Deconstructions serves to deliver thoughts of the writer to the reader/viewer through the narrative, can be seen as tactless
    • The intended Deconstruction angle becoming a way for the writer to personally belittle or criticize the narrative
    • If the Decontruction is too on the nose, it can be seen as edgy, unoriginal, and/or tastelesss
    • The Deconstruction is used to attack the narrative disrespectfully, intended or not
    • Nothing meaningful is conveyed and waste the time of the readers/viewers
  • Character
    • The character is purposely written as a cliche a mile away with the Deconstruction serving as a means to spit on them
    • The Deconstruction of the character either worsens the perception and/or makes the reader/viewer or goes nowhere
    • The character's mere existence and/or appearance detracts and/or hurts the narrative the longer they're there
    • The character's Deconstruction is done mean-spirited, disrespectfully, and makes the reader/viewer wanting to not see them at all
    • Makes the reader/viewer feel uncomfortable no matter how well-written they are
    • Exists as a self-insert of the writer's personal thoughts and eats up all of the screentime
    • The character's Deconstruction and character writing do not align with each other or the narrative at large, often conflicting with each other

And I will once more talk about The Warrior Returns as Season 1 will be the first portion of the Manhwa's story that people will be exposed to the most. Season 1 is one of the most flawed stories I have ever read due to how the narrative and characters are written that makes Season 0 even more amazing than it has to be. It has one of the most contentious and controversial opening chapters, a equally contentious storyline with characters no one can get behind for most of the series, horrendous pacing that is as fast as a bullet train, plot twists and Ass Pulls that have literally no proper build up, and highly questionable writing thrown up everywhere.

It doesn't help that the very first chapter opens up like your traditional Isekai story with Minsu Kim's entire character purposely written and drawn as generic as possible with a white truck-kun doing him in. His entire backstory is like every other Isekai protagonist, his journey is speedrun through like no tommorrow, and any ounce of character he should've had is ripped apart at the end of the first chapter as he ends the lives of thousands of people in a single swing. He is done dirty and he literally has no character whatsoever and he remains as barebones as possible because of how his Deconstruction is done with a justified narrative reason.

Throughout Season 1, Minsu Kim constantly is tormented and treated like crap by the writer to the point that we're supposed to believe all the tramua he's gone through and commited to would render him emotionless and stoic unless need to be. But instead of talking when he needs to like his Season 0 iteration, his Season 1 iteration talks almost all the time while constantly acting as a self-insert for the writer who happens to have the most dialogue of any character in Season 1 alone. It does not help that Season 1 has almost no backstory to flesh out his character which Season 0 swiftly patched up, so much of his dialogue is just him ranting about his problems, how he is THE victim, how the world is unfair, how much he wants to spread his despair and suffering to others to no end, and that his entire character is disrespectful to Isekai in general. It does not help that he is more popular than the protagonist, and that most people would've preferred if he was the main character instead of the Big Bad.

He remains this way until he transitions into a deconstructed Generic Doomsday Villain aka turning into a Demon Lord himself. The reveal behind why his return turned him evil was foreshadowed lightly but got drowned out by his actions, he's actually not even supposed to be the Big Bad but he's supposed to be The Paragon was not... taken very well due to how he was written. It's hard to see him as a believeable character when he spends much of his screentime being a self-insert for the writer to possess and an insult to his character archetype.

I do understand that the writer tried their best to make Minsu Kim a character by having him talk alot, it's just he didn't have a properly built backstory to support his rather awful character writing. There are cases where a character with no backstory is a compelling character through dialogue alone, but it'll only work if they're treated as a seperate enitity than a mouthpiece.

Thankfully, Season 0's entire goal is to properly flesh out his character and salvage his Deconstruction by fleshing out the other characters. As you know, the opening chapter for both Seasons run through his backstory as part of his Deconstruction. What the writer does with him in Season 0 turned him from what I see as The Scrappy to Rescued from the Scrappy Heap in just ten chapters by not using him as a self-insert or having him talk almost all the time, turning him from a mouthpiece to someone who is truly someone who is suffering and grieving despite his actions, realigning his character writing to matchup with the narrative and properly spend time developing him as need to be. He goes from being an insult to Isekai to a well-thought up and original Deconstruction of a Isekai protagonist who truly deserves his position as the narrative's Big Bad. He's treated as a character than something the writer needs to possess and/or project into.

Season 1 spent much of its screentime getting the readers to understand his character at the cost of any proper development of the other characters around him which includes the supposed main character. The other character who gets the most time is the very person who turned Minsu Kim into the Big Bad, and he's a huge Deconstruction on a Isekai protagonist who has time/reset related powers. The first ten chapters of Season 0 tastefully captures the entirety of what his character is supposed to be which makes him a ironically compelling character, giving everyone other character their time to develop and shine.

The narrative of Season 1 is quite different from Season 0 as it is expects the reader to know what Isekai and the general character archetypes just like how Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse speedruns its character introductions as if the reader has read Spider-man comics. While Season 0 is plagued by slow pacing and Arc Faituge, I consider it a massive improvement as it explores what happened before the main story of Season 1 started. It goes into how Minsu Kim and his group ended up taking over South Korea, what happened to the Warriors that ooposed them and how South Korea and the world's efforts failed, why the Warriors were chosen as their respective world's chosen ones and why they do the things they do, and why Jeongsu Park is the main character instead of the other Warriors.

Season 1's narrative focuses on Minsu Kim's transformation into Earth's Demon Lord and how the world properly fights back against the Warriors that follow Minsu Kim. The problem is that the narrative goes super fast, spending five to ten chapters per arc with Minsu Kim's character getting the most focus while Jeongsu Park's character becomes Out of Focus.

It goes from Jeongsu Park facing the Monster of the Week for about twenty chapters to Ass Pulling the existence of the previous generation of Warriors fighting on the side of humanity and their respective battles against the other Warriors for another twenty chapters to the rather convoluted Plot Twist of Earth being stuck in a infinite time loop due to someone's returning/regressor powers and Minsu Kim's transformation and the aftermath for about fortyish chapters.

While I consider the reveal of why Minsu Kim is evil as a amazing plot twist despite his character writing hampering him, I think the introduction of the previous generation of Warriors and their respective battles as filler as it does not contribute to the narrative despite its Deconstruction angle at play. Let alone the very fact that the existence of other Warriors and a previous generation of them is an Ass Pull itself due to no proper build up.

The worldbuilding is actually pretty good as it does explore how the world would react to a Isekai protagonist suddenly going postal. The results aren't very pretty as no conventional weaponry is able to take them out while the powers of the Warriors are able to turn them into swiss cheese easily. The world will treat them as threats regardless if they're good people or not and would gladly get rid of them due to their lethal potential. They will not care if you're just a kid, they will see you as a monster who could snap at any moment.

While the worlds the Warriors are brought to barely make an appearance, they also get the Deconstruction treatment as their very nature of being Warriors into their world is brought into question. In the setting, the worlds that are plagued by a Demon Lord that returns every one hundred years or so, and they're threatened with the destruction of their worlds should they be left to their own devices. Earth is one of the worlds called a Void World, a world that serves as a place where the other worlds can "call" upon a person who is suitable as a Warrior aka a Isekai protagonist. Should their chosen Warrior fail, the world is destroyed with the Warrior in tow.

The requirements of being a Warrior varies between each world, but they all share one set requirement. That requirement is that they need to be a teenager which is one of the very things that most Isekai protagonists are, the other is their general personality. One of the bad things is that this system is a unintentional conscripting program that turns generally unwilling teenagers into weapons of mass destruction and child soldiers with severe mental issues. They're also taken away from a normal life and thrown into a war they never asked to be apart of for a year.

Each and every Warrior in the narrative are negatively impacted by this system. Each and every last one of them is forced into a war against their will, forced to fight in a world they have no attachments to, and away from whatever life they have for a year. While Season 1 glosses over the backstories of most of the Warriors in favor of Minsu Kim's Deconstruction, Season 0 brings those backstories full force. The results aren't exactly very pretty to say the least as most of them have Dark and Troubled Pasts who all heavily contrast the basic backstory of Minsu Kim, all of them are not your conventional Isekai protagonists to boot.

You've got a guy who is downright evil to the core summoned to a world who needs him to end their lives and given the powers of diease, you've got guy who was a former criminal who killed himself for getting his best friend hurt over his actions summoned to a world of giant robots, you've got a girl who was abused by a cult she was a part of summoned to a world of faith and given faithwashing powers, you've got a guy with abusive parents who lived with his grandmother transported to a world of taoists who returns to see his grandmother passed away while he was away, and much more.

Then you have the guy with time-regression powers transported into a typical LitRPG world who can't turn off his powers at all, who is forced to find a way to free the world from his powers. Forcing him to create a Demon Lord on Earth as only a Demon Lord can free him from his powers. He gets stuck in a time loop that lasts nearly... 125,000 years or more until he turned Minsu Kim evil as a ditch effort.

It's complicated to say the least that most of these Warriors aren't saints, but they help enhance Minsu Kim by being far too different from him. Sure, they have way more character than his Season 1 iteration by far but they all contribute to enhancing his Season 0 iteration through show and tell.

Of course, there are questionable writing choices to aid in the Deconstruction such as how the existence of a previous generation of Warriors shaped the world technologically and historically. It's rather silly when the very first chapter is spent it's time doing the most cliche of things, then doing the second chapter exploring one of Minsu Kim's rampages, then having the third chapter introducing Warriors like him within a timeskip of a year out of nowhere. Then reveal that the world has always had teenagers from all over the world Isekai'd upped the suspension of belief, like they come out of nowhere and we're to believe that a previous generation just watched the world get taken over by them?

We are told through narration that throughout history famous figures have been Warriors, altering and shaping the course of history through their powers and abilities. Using them to advance the technologies of their time periods and bring their respective countries to power. You have Moses being a Warrior, he wasn't chosen by God, he had Isekai powers.

And then you have the entirety of World War II happening because a Nazi Warrior using his powers of Faith to create Fascism, and the Queen of England dunking him into Belarus to stop Minsu Kim. Yeah, his arc is like five chapters and is swiftly forgotten.

Yeah, I hope none of you finished reading this bit. Almost sounds like I'm ranting when it's really not the case. I just happen to think alot more when it's something I have a problem with on a analyical level.

Character Writing

So, you want to write a character that is akin to someone in the Sis RPG series but you do not know where and how to do so?

Fear not, this guide here will help you figure out how to build and write your own set of characters or atleast to the best of my ability on what they should generally be. I will seperate them in three sections, Main characters, Supporting Characters, and Antagonists to make things alitte bit easier to digest.

Just for reference, I'll explain the three types of characters through here for better understanding.

  • Main Characters
  • Main Characters in the context of Sis RPG are what the narratives of each entry are seen through the perspective of. It does not mean that they're the protagonist of the narrative they're in despite generally being the first character introduced in the narrative. Most of the Main Characters that isn't Oscar falls victim to either becoming a Decoy Protagonist to the real protagonist or a full-blown Villain Protagonist.

A good example of a Main Character is obviously President Sanderson and Edo-maru. Their usage and positions as Main Characters as they serve as both Character Studies and Deconstructions to to the various tropes of their respective entries.

  • Supporting Characters
  • Supporting Characters series-wide have always been used either as vehicles to progress and enhance the narrative forward, worldbuild and foreshadowing devices, a means to develop the other characters, and cannon fodder for comedic effect. Over the years of the series, the usage of Supporting Characters have gone through an evolution and phase, going from One-Shot and throwaway characters to a fully-fledged array of "Reuse, Reduce, Recycle" Recurring Characters and Recurring Elements. Most of these Supporting Characters eventually end up becoming walking and talking Memes and Shitposts, becoming more memorable than the Main Characters and Antagonists.

Yes, I'm talking about you, Jacob. You ate up all of Oscar's free time and got away with it. Why would you do this to my favorite protagonist, Jacob!

  • Antagonists
  • Antagonists in this series have always been a complicated matter because they vary in usage, they vary in the roles they're in, and they blend in with the roles of the Main Characters half of the time. Early on, they were largely an afterthought and treated akin to the Supporting Characters and especially the throwaway characters. They later on started becoming more involved with the narratives of the newer entries, sharing equal time with the Main Characters and sometimes overshadowing them in terms of both screentime and presence.

A good example of an Antagonist is Thomas Jefferson and the Dark Lord from Big-Bust Brawl, both of them exhibit two different things that a Antagonist should be. The first thing is good writing and which the Dark Lord displays throughout their entry's narrative, acting as both a Foil to the Deconstruction to the main character. The second is presence which Thomas Jefferson has, actively being in the narrative and sharing equal screentime, constantly developing himself and the main character like a tennis match.

Early Era
  • Characterization
  • Simple and easy-to-understand, anyone can get behind them, they're generally upstanding and moral or atlest to whatever makes sense to them, and act and react like how most people should. They are mostly your typical everyday person regardless of what job they hold during the narrative. In CYOA-styled narratives, all of their thoughts are on full-display where they react to everything that is happening around them.

  • Role
  • They generally assume and take a generally passive role in the narrative and they are the eyes the reader/viewer looks through. Most of them stay as your typical protagonist going through regular day in their life, and they generally lack presence. In entries where a CYOA-styled narrative is used, they have a good chunk of inner monologues regarding plot developments and the people they meet.

  • Usage
  • In most narratives they appear in, they act point-of-view character as they either act as the center of the narrative or they're thrown into crazy situations trying to survive it. There isn't anything special about them as they were used experimentally with the narratives they're thrown into.

Middle Era
  • Characterization
  • They are introduced with a backstory into their life with the intention of giving the reader/viewer sympathy, but they gradually and eventually lose it over the course of the narrative due to the increasingly hostile actions they take, they also do the least sensible thing known to mankind and act like a Grand Theft Auto Protagonist akin to Trevor Philips. Most of their behavior can be chalked up for comedic effect, veering and edging on Black Comedy more often than not. They range from everyday people who want to do good things, people who just want to get through the end of the day with their life intact, and/or the most unlikely people given the most unlikely thing.

  • Role
  • They take a more protactive role in the narrative, seperating themelves of being the eyes for the reader/viewer almost straight off the bat either through their own actions or because of how the narrative goes. Since the Middle Era focuses on high-action insanity, most of the characters can be compared and seen as action-flick leads. They either stay as the protagonist, become a Decoy Protagonist and replaced by another character and/or turns into a Villain Protagonist. Most of the time, they are generally a character that a reader/viewer shouldn't see in a good light despite them being a Meme and Shitpost series.

  • Usage
  • In every narrative they appear in, they completely seperate themselves from the reader/viewer by establishing themselves as character than a vehicle to inhibit. While they may not be the center of the narrative all the time, they are the focal point that often drives the narrative forward through their actions. One of the most interesting things about them is how they're sometimes used to Deconstruct a few tropes in the narrative they're in, and act as huge contrast to the Antagonist and Supporting Characters - as a Foil and Shadow Archetype.

Late Era
  • Characterization
  • They're a full-on Deconstructions of various tropes blended into a character, one of them is the Antagonist and the other is the Main Character, often both Main Characters and Antagonist are so similar to each other that it's hard to tell who is who at times. Main Characters in the Late Era are by default the most unrelateable characters you'll ever find as they often start out either as Anti-Heroes, Anti-Villains, and/or Villain Protagonists where they're not given any sort of backstory for the reader/viewer to understand them. Instead, most of their character is established either though their actions and/or Hidden Depths, used as a means to explore the Deconstructive angle of the tropes they have. They are often walking and talking Meme machines, dropping lots of One-Liners than acting like a character.

They're either a unique One-Shot character like President Sanderson or a Recurring Character like Sam not unlike an Antagonist from the Late Era.

  • Role
  • They are the front center of the narrative alongside the Antagonist as they intentionally seperate themselves and alienate the reader/viewer without an ounce of mercy. Completely turning any narrative they're in into a character-driven story while ironically getting the least amount of development into their characters outside of any depth they're given from Hidden Depths. They can be considered a awfully weird case of a Heroic Comedic Sociopath since their only function outside of being a Main Character and causing problems is to be a Meme with alot of One-Liners.

  • Usage
  • They serve more as a Deconstruction of Tropes they inhibit than behaving and acting like an actual character, being a vehicle into exploring various Tropes to either the most logical and conclusive or the most insane and Black Comedy it can ever end. While Hidden Depths help round out any sort of characterization issues, they are namely a vehicle and a Meme.

Early Era
  • Characterization
  • They're just your typical walking and talking exposition devices with some ounce of character, there are some rare exceptions to this though. Just like the Main Characters, they're generally more normal than they are, everyday people whose lives are changed forever.

  • Role
  • Their role is to be a plot device for both the Main Characters, the Antagonist, and the reader/viewer. Providing bits of worldbuilding, exposition, and delivering any developments in the narrative. Generally when their role of any of those are done, they are swiftly killed off in the most comedic manner or anti-climatically depending on the narrative they're in.

  • Usage
  • Most of these Supporting Characters are One-Shots and throwaways, only existing to service and deliver either characterization for both the Main Characters and Antagonist, and lightly build upon the world and setting of the narrative they're in.

Middle Era
  • Characterization
  • Instead of being your typical walking and talking exposition devices, they're more fleshed out characters who all have different reasons to be in the narrative they're in. Sometimes they act like completely normal people thrown into a world of crazy and insane situations, sometimes they're equally insane in relation to the situations they're in. They're either helpful or antagonistic to the Main Characters, they enhance both the Main Characters and Antagonist, act as both as a comedic device andadvancement to the narratives they're in, and all of them have a purpose to exist.

  • Role
  • Their general role is to bring flavor, to bring comedic and dark elements, and to enhance the narratives they're in. Instead of just existing to service and provide, they enhance and enrich the worldbuilding and setting by being a part of it and not simply existing. They complinment and add flavor to the other characters and sometimes become a Spotlight-Stealing Squad aka stealing all the screen time.

  • Usage
  • Some of these Supporting Characters are either One-Shots or Recurring Characters and Recurring Elements, with the latter becoming common over the course of the Middle Era. With the latter, they retain their initial characterization but their roles and purposes are completely different, often becoming cannon fodder whenever their screentime is over. But regardless, their intended usage is to set up the mood of the narrative, enhance both the characters and narrative, and give the reader/viewer some level of enjoyment.

Late Era
  • Characterization
  • As if taking lessons and notes from the entries of the Middle Era, the Late Era's Supporting Characters dial down from being fully fleshed characters and Spotlight-Stealing Squads to a "return-to-form" akin to the Early Era. Although despite this, they are often compare to their reaction to their situation like their Middle Era counterparts.

  • Role
  • As a consequence of "return-to-form" in the Late Era, the role of the Supporting Characters here have been greatly reduced from being actual characters to walking and talking plot devices functioning in various things. Without any sort of specific kind of worldbuilding, most of their time onscreen is to either act as a tool for Black Comedy or recontexualizing as a plot device such as a Knight of Cerebus. Once their role is done, they either become the twist Main character or Antagonist, or killed off as the narrative shifts to a darker tone.

They're often the ones ending the narrative since both the Main Characters and the Antagonist usually are either killed off or worse. Sometimes they even become the Main Characters through Plot Twists.

  • Usage
  • These kinds of Supporting Characters are utilized whenever they're needed for the narrative unlike the Middle Era. They only briefly appear either for a few seconds to a few minutes, leaving much of the development of the narrative and screentime to the Main Characters and Antagonist. Their usage is for comedic effect and not exactly for plot advancement/development.

Early Era
  • Characterization
  • More often than not, they're either written as one-note and forgettable with one memorable scene or a Big Bad Duumvirate aka a combination of Antagonists either working together or a cast of Antagonists. They're either Generic Doomsday Villain like a Dark Lord in name or simple versions of Anti-Villains such as a school teacher. Sometimes, the narrative doesn't have an Antagonist at all.

  • Role
  • One of the big problems of the Early Era for an Antagonist is how they're treated as an afterthought than a character, either only appearing at the start of, the middle of, or at the end of a narrative with minimal screentime at best. Most of them exist to simply either give the Main Character involved with the narrative as a end goal to reach, simply there for the Main Character to beat the crap out of, or to appear out of nowhere to steer the narrative in a specific direction. I do mean window-dressing in case any of you were curious how I was going to designate the Early Era Antagonists.

  • Usage
  • They're basically window-dressing without any real purpose because their characterization is so bare minimal. They're merely a goalpost for the Main Character to confront, maybe.

Middle Era
  • Characterization
  • This is where the writing for the Antagonists improve to the point they've evolved from being window-dressing to an actual characters. Their characterization is either them being a Anti-Villain with extremely sensible reasons, accidental Hero Antagonists with justifible reasons to stop the Main Characters, or a evil scumbag who does it evil because they can. They're more mundane instead of being a Generic Doomsday Villain in name, going for everyday people.

  • Role
  • Instead of being an afterthought and window-dressing, they're full-on characters that give the narrative and the Main Characters a reason to exist and to occur in the first place. Just like the Supporting Characters of the Middle Era, they bring in flavor to the narrative and help enhance just about everything. Although, they only appear when they need to be instead of existing as a goal to be met.

  • Usage
  • They have a purpose unlike the Early Era Antagonists, they're basically Middle Era Supporting Characters outside of having lots of screentime and a focus on establishing characterization of the Main Characters. Their usage is far more effective than their Early Era counerparts.

Late Era
  • Characterization
  • The Antagonists of the Late Era in terms of characterization have been greatly blurred as the equal screen time they share with the Main Characters give both of them equally interesting dyamnics and characters. They either act as a genuinely Good Counterpart who is better than the Main Characters in terms of morality, a well-written Foil, a Mirror Character, and/or become so similar that they'r effectively sharing the same brain cell. Then you have another kind of Antagonist, the one that is confronted at the end of the narrative, and they're basically a fully fleshed out Early Era Antagonist who only exists to give flavor to the other characters.

Anyhow, they're generally a Generic Doomssday Villain in name or someone very similar to the Main Characters such as a regular person. They're also most likely a Recurring Element than a Recurring Character not unlike a Late Era Main Character.

  • Role
  • There are two different roles and functions for the Late Era Antagonists, the one that is actively against the Main Characters is the one that shares most and/or even equals amount of screentime with them and the one that only appears near the end of the narrative.

The one that is against the Main Characters is the one that the reader/viewer is exposed to the most, and their primary function is to serve as a secondary protagonist acting as a Foil and/or Mirror Character. For most narratives, they're basically a prt of the Deconstruction angle that builds on top of the Main Character's. They also add in and supplement the lack of development the Main Characters go through, helping them establish some sort of Hidden Depths if there are any.

The other is the one that appears at the near end of the narrative. They're basically better dressed window-dressing with an actual purpose outside of existing as some sort of goal to be approached by the Main Characters and their fellow Antagonists if they're around.

  • Usage
  • Regardless of which type of Late Era Antagonist that is going to be talked about, their usage will always be a constantly related to the Main Characters. They are always present in the narrative either constantly or whenever they need to be, almost always adding flavor to the Main Characters and the narratives they're in.

Tropes list

Here is a long list of tropes that I have used and gathered through my time doing the writing portion of the Remake's writing overhaul. I made this list exclusively to ensure if anyone was ever curious about the tropes that each and every entry used, regardless if they're here to understand why it is used or for research purposes.

Each and every entry has been logged and put into two different groups, ones written by Kuniko Takahashi are considered Mainline while the ones written by other people such as ChairGTables are Parodies. Each and every entry under these groups have two different lists of the tropes they have under their belt, tropes that focus and/or influence the narrative are called Narrative Tropes while tropes that characters display are called Character Tropes.

While there are some tropes that are considered universial in their usage, they are sorted either in Narrative Tropes or Character Tropes. All of them link to their respective pages with any list of tropes using the same link just in case they want to focus on a specific entry and their list.
